I participated in the Canda-Sweden Arctic Ocean 2025 research cruise. I had the
amazing oppourtinity to go onboard of the Ice Breaker Oden for 42 days as it sailed up over the
North Pole towards Siberia and back again, while attending the summer school on board learning
about many different facets of Arctic science, from paleoarcheology, all the way to the politics
concerening marine research up there. I worked along with a great team mapping the sea bed as my
primary task. I got to learn in great detail how multibeams work, and play around with fisheries
sonars (an EK80), and a sub bottom profiler too, while also seeing how a research cruise is run. During
my time on board we mapped an area of the sea bed greater than the size of Belgium! Helping better understand
ocean currents, but also mapping the route for a proposed fibre optic link between Northern
Europe and East Asia, and mapping the extent of Canadas Extended Continatal Shelf.
I also brought
an Underwater Vision Profiler on board, a device made for taking pictures of micro-organisms in
the water column and histograms of the distribution of size spectra over depth. It was regularly lowered down
to about 4000 m deep during our stops for scientific work. I was responsible for processing the
data and making sure it was working well throughout the trip. I also deployed an Argo float on
board, at the time of it's deployment, the 10th most northenly Argo float currently active. It
immediately disappeared under the ice, I am very much looking forward to seeing the data when it
comes up. I took my film camera with me on board too.
